What's Blooming This Week

Hellebores

Up here in the Hudson Valley, there's not much blooming until April. One of the few exceptions is the beautiful, diverse hellebore, which starts to open its blooms at the end of March. These flowers will continue to bloom through April and May. They are perfect for adding dusty tones to any spring arrangement. So if you're looking for spring flowers for your wedding in that muted, muddy color palette, hellebores are a must have.

I refuse to say that these are the “trends” of 2022. Floral design is so individual, and all design styles are valid and worthy of expression. (Except for the ones that are bad for the environment.) So instead I will say that these are the design ideas that excite me as we head into the 2022 wedding season. I hope you find something in here that excites you too!

How the Pandemic Changed my Business & Me for the Better

(But let's be honest, the struggle is still VERY real)

In 2020, we all had to decide what was really important. I decided it was really important to me and that Three Notch Florals was fully committing to locally grown flowers. At first I thought using local flowers was just something I was doing to help local farms. I didn't want to see them close because they an important part of our community and a way we can combat the (actually rather horrible) carbon footprint of the flower industry. But now I realize how much it has helped me get through the pandemic as well.

My New Years Letter to Everyone Who Supported Three Notch Florals This year

This year I sent out a New Years email to all of the amazing people who trusted Three Notch to provide them with flowers in 2020, whether it was their wedding or a "just because" delivery. I wanted to tell them how, even though this year was a bit of a financial and emotional disaster, their support saved it from being a total loss. They kept me going and gave me hope. And I also wanted to tell them about how Three Notch is changing. Through the influence of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, this company is not the same as it was on January 1, 2019.

Part 1: Identifying the Problems

Let's start with what are the major problems we should look out for. You may think: "it's flowers, how could they possibly be bad for the environment?" But the truth is, not only do the flowers themselves cause huge environmental problems, but also the floral and design industry is not just flowers. It's vases and candles and ribbon and zip ties and fabric and linens and signage and installations mechanics and waste disposal and so much transportation! Once we know what problems we're looking out for, we can see how every piece of the wedding has the potential to harm or help our Earth.
